MISSION Story Slam Podcast Kenny Chiu & Michelle Palmer MISSION Story Slam 11: It’s A Family Affair

“I think that we definitely want to inspire other teachers, but for this type of podcast, I thought that Kenny would be a natural. Just seeing how he was at Breakthrough and, you know, we try to make Breakthrough a lot of fun, right? So the teachers come in, they dress up, they get into the spirit, Y2K day, throwbacks, all types of things. And Kenny always got into the spirit of any type of dress up for the kids. You know, he was never afraid to like, some people were like, I don't want to do that.”

MISSION Story Slam Podcast Atiyah Harmon MISSION Story Slam 13: Braver Today

“I noticed Black girls severely underrepresented in the STEM field, but girls in schools also weren’t excelling in math for several reasons including math identity and underrepresentation . So I created a curriculum to teach math differently, to honor the girls' thinking and problem-solving capabilities.

The development of Black Girls Love Math centers on the belief that a positive identity and growth mindset for girls that identify as Black will lead to positive outcomes in achievement and overall identity.”

ATIYAH HARMON

Social Impact Strategist, Founder & Executive Director Black Girls Love Math, a mission-driven organization that eliminates gender and racial inequalities in math for all who identify as Black girls in grades K-12. Atiyah shared her origin story and more on the podcast with Michael Schweisheimer.
